At Le Web this morning Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced Spotify Radio, which is an app built on top of their existing platform which will offer unlimited stations and unlimited skips. This is going to effectively put them head to head with Pandora who are primarily in the ‘Radio’ area of the market. At the moment, Pandora gives limited control over what the user can hear, but following today’s announcement I’d fully expect them to drastically alter this to meet the new challenge from Spotify if they are able .
Spotify currently has 9.9 million monthly active users according to the latest app data released by AppData who use the app on Facebook alone and has a catalogue of over 15 million songs available for on-demand streaming.
With Spotify now engaged in the UK and US market, it’s fairly simple to see that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with, with the new addition of radio. Spotify Radio will also be available on mobile platforms soon.
On the other hand unfortunately, Pandora are currently restricted via licencing issues outside of the US. This is not the fault of Pandora, but with the major labels who’s greed will be the death of them as they fail to adapt their old business way to allow new innovative start-ups like Pandora to function.
Dear Pandora Visitor,
We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

Here is what the Spotify site says about the new addition:
To get started
Starting a radio station is easy. Click “Start Artist Radio” at the top of any artist page or just drag a track to “Radio” in the left sidebar. Spotify will make a radio station of similar music.
Then sit back. Or dance about. Your station will keep playing music based on your initial choice, it’s endless. And there’s no limit to the number of stations you can create.
A unique radio experience
Thanks to our all-new intelligent recommendation engine and multi-million track library, Spotify Radio is a music discovery experience without equal.
Don’t like a track? Skip it. You can skip as many times as you like. It’s your radio station.
We’ll be starting to roll out this brand new radio along with Spotify Apps in the next few days. Can’t wait?
