File Sharing Comes To Facebook

Today, Facebook is launching the ability for members of Groups to easily share files with members of that Group. It was released on a far smaller scale last month with Facebook Groups for Schools, but is now available to anyone within a group.

There are however some limitations, which are:

  • The file limit is set to 25MB per file
  • Music is not permitted to be shared
  • Executables files (.exe) are also not allowed
However, with regards music sharing, technically you could have the music in a video (music video) and simply share the video and then extract the music separately, but that’s way too much effort. I can see why Facebook have stopped people from sharing music, but surely independent bands that wish to share their stuff with fans that use Facebook are going to be unnecessarily punished with this blanket blocking?
Anyway, if you want to know how to use it, then here it is. If you are in a group, then you should see that the ‘Upload File’ link is now available in your group allowing you to share with other members. If you don’t see it yet, then don’t worry as this feature is rolling out to everyone now.
Simply click ‘Upload File’, then browse to the file you wish to share and upload it. It really is dead simple.

Once it has uploaded, you will see that there are 2 options available to you, or other members of the group. Download or Upload a revised version of the file.

For test purposes, I uploaded a revised video (higher quality) version

It will inform you that there are revisions of the file by the History link. How many revisions will be shown in the brackets.

That’s pretty much it. As you can see though, it’s extremely limited and I can’t see many people using it with the limitations on a large scale.

If you are looking for a decent way to share files with your friends without the limitations that Facebook’s sharing has, then see this list below:

Basically, anything but Facebook’s way.
If this is Facebook’s attempt to get into Cloud Storage to keep up with any of the current decent services above, then this is a fail due to a huge lack of tools and the limitations imposed.
