Did Entertainment Weekly Accidentally Reveal That Benedict Cumberbatch Is Khan?

Star Trek Kirk and Khan

Entertainment Weekly may have just let slip what has been previously denied over and over again, that Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing the infamous character Khan, in the latest Star Trek movie.

The people behind J. J. Abrams’ Star Trek: Into Darkness have been keeping a lot of the story line a tight-lipped secret up until now, which is impressive for a film as big as this as they have tried to keep any clues as to the character that Benedict Cumberbatch may be playing hidden. Now the apparent slip up by EW may be a huge speculation on their behalf and Cumberbatch’s character is actually John Harrison, or it was just an internal error. I really can’t see that being the case though as EW are normally one of the first sites to have big revealing news regarding the entertainment industries latest ventures.

We were first introduced to Khan in Star Trek The Original Series in ‘Space Seed‘ Season One Episode 22. The episode originally aired on first broadcast on February 16, 1967. The synopsis for that episode was:

The Enterprise discovers an ancient sleeper ship, the SS Botany Bay, which escaped from Earth’s Eugenics Wars in the late 20th century. The genetically engineered passengers, led by war criminal Khan Noonien Singh, seize control of the Enterprise and attempt to destroy the ship. (This episode serves as the backstory to the second Star Trek film)

In an interview with Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve, who plays Dr Carol Marcus, with IGN last year, Cumberbatch described his character as “a home grown terrorist” and “a one-man weapon of mass destruction.”. He also said that at one point in the film the audience would sympathize with him even after the attack on Star Fleet. During the interview Alice Eve mentions that her character was also in the original series and Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Did she mention that as a hint to Khan being in the film, who knows, or maybe I’m just reaching here. Whatever happens in the film, J.J cracked the time-line in the previous Star Trek giving himself plenty of room to play with the various characters.

Star Trek: Into Darkness is to hit the big screen on 17th May 2013 and will be shown in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D.
